Spinal infusion pumps & spinal cord stimulators

Patients don’t have to live with pain

It has been estimated that over 50 million Americans live with some type of debilitating pain. Unfortunately, the majority of them do not seek treatment. Some believe that their pain is a natural byproduct of aging, and they have to live with it. Many are unaware that their pain can be reduced with proper treatment.

Here at Summit Pain Management, we use proven treatments such as spinal infusion pumps and spinal cord stimulators to reduce pain that does not respond to oral medication or injection therapy. These procedures are minimally invasive with a short recovery time.

Spinal infusion pumps

A spinal infusion pump, or intrathecal pump, is designed to relieve pain after other pain relief methods have failed. The pump delivers small amounts of medicine directly into the fluid around the spinal cord, decreasing pain signals that reach the brain.

We typically perform a pump trial first to determine whether the medicine is effective before placing the permanent pump. The medications in the pump will be refilled or adjusted to meet the patient’s needs. Many patients only need a few office visits each year to maintain adequate pain control with a spinal infusion pump.

Spinal cord stimulators

A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) uses safe, low-level electrical currents to interrupt the pain signals reaching the brain. We typically perform a trial implantation first. We rely on patient feedback to determine the most effective placement of the SCS to reduce the patient’s pain.

Peripheral nerve field stimulation (PNFS) is a related procedure where the electrical leads are simply placed under the skin near the nerves that are causing the pain. Both SCS and PNFS typically create a pleasant sensation for the patient, and many patients only need a few office visits a year to maintain adequate pain control.

In many cases, patients undergoing these procedures for either spinal infusion pumps or SCS can reduce their oral pain medications.
